FALL IS THE BEST TIME TO PLANT SHRUBS AND TREES!

Spread the love

Davidson County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers will present their fall plant sale on Saturday, October 8th, 8am-noon at Lexington Farmers Market at the Depot, 129 S. Railroad St, Lexington, NC. The proceeds from this event will help support many community projects; educational exhibits, talks and conferences; as well as their scholarship program.

Scholarships are awarded to persons having interest in fields related to agriculture and horticulture. Some careers of past recipients are: horticultural science researcher, forestry agent, veterinarian, greenhouse manager and high school agriculture teacher. Since 2012 over $17,000 has been given.

Over the years, Master Gardeners have planned and/or planted many non-profit projects:  Libraries at Denton and Tyro, Linwood/Southmont Post Office, Crisis Ministries, YMCA, Cancer Service Center, Habitat houses, Kiwanis summer camp and many, many more.

They also plant and maintain beautiful demonstration gardens at the Agricultural Center on East Center Street. These gardens are open to the public to explore and learn about the wide scope of plants that can be grown successfully in their own yards. Most recently, they have teamed up with Arts Davidson County to bring ‘Art in the Garden’ to the community.

MG Volunteers are often invited to organizations, libraries and schools to give informative talks on various gardening topics. They set up educational exhibits at Lexington and Thomasville Farmers Markets and Davidson County Fair, assist with special events at the markets and work at the BBQ Festival. In the spring the association of MG volunteers organizes an extraordinary public Gardeners Conference to bring world-class gardening speakers to all those interested, charging less than it costs to present.

All these endeavors require many volunteer hours and quality people and materials to succeed. This plant sale helps to provide the funds needed.
